Abstract


VIEWS OF PRE-SERVICE SOCIAL SCIENCES TEACHERS RELATED TO THE CONCEPT OF “ÇANAKKALE IN ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY”
Canakkale Wars that started by the insistence of English, as the Ministry of Navy Winston Churchill as the leading, during the 1st World War in February, 1915, lasted for nearly 10 months until the withdrawal of Allied Powers from the Dardanelles as being overwhelmed by the Turkish soldiers in January, 2016 is one of the milestones of Turkish history. Understanding, meaning and feeling the spirit of Canakkale after 100 years from the war has been more remarkable rather than the resting years. The concepts as one of the most important factors of the constructivist approach are significant in terms of explaining the events, cases and factors and concretizing the thought. Concepts provide similar objects, people, events, ideas and processes to distinguish from each other, and help establishing relationships between the other groups, cases, events, ideas and processes, as well. Constructing these concepts and phenomena and events related to these concepts in mind on time and efficiently causes overcoming of several problems. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the views of social sciences teaching 1st grade students related to the concept of “Çanakkale in its 100th Anniversary.” The study sample included 33 students studying at the 1st grade of Haci Bektas Veli University, Faculty of Education, Social Sciences Teaching department in 2014-2015 academic year. In the research, qualitative research methodology was adapted, and the research was carried out in phenomenology design. The data collection tool was an open-ended questionnaire form including 6 questions developed by the researchers and prepared asking the views of the specialists. Obtained data were analyzed using the content analysis method, and codes were created in accordance with the given answers. The created codes were correlated, and views of the students were interpreted. In conclusion, students’ establishing interest upon the values such as national unity and solidarity, patriotism, independence and peace related to the concept of “Canakkale in its 100th Anniversary was remarkable.
