Abstract


DETERMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TYPES OF ANALOGY AND LEARNING STYLES PREPARED BY STUDENTS ABOUT SCIENCE SUBJECTS

The fact that individuals use their unique characteristics while performing permanent learning reveals the importance of learning styles. Learning styles reveal that each individual has unique learning styles. Learning occurs when the intellectual processes are used effectively on the existence of information, and the individual expresses his/her cognitive states using different ways. Analogies play an important role in the process of explaining unknown facts by making comparisons and using connections between facts based on a known fact. In other words, they are structures that transform a difficult concept into a simple form and enable effective and permanent learning. Analogies are a cognitive process that enables permanent learning that supports the acquisition and development of new knowledge. Based on the fact that learning is an intellectual process, it may be important to determine the types of analogies created in terms of learning styles. The aim of this research is to determine the analogies created by the pre-service teachers among their learning styles.” The sample of the research consists of 60 pre-service teachers studying at the Department of Primary Education at the Faculty of Education of Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University. In this study, descriptive research model was used. In this study, the Vermunt Learning Styles Inventory with 120 questions was used. Vermunt evaluated the learning styles scale in four sub-dimensions. Vermunt defined four different dimensions: "Learning orientations, regulation strategies, processing strategies, and mental models of learning" in order to determine the characteristics of learning. In this study, analogy samples created to determine the types of analogies created by pre-service teachers were examined. Types of analogies created by pre-service teachers considering the use and function of analogies; Four different types were determined as simple, story style, gamified and analogy with pictures. As a result of the research, the types of analogies prepared by the teacher candidates in terms of learning styles were determined. It has been determined that pre-service teachers generally create simple and story-like analogies.
