Abstract


GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The necessity of ensuring the continuity and effective use of World resources has led to the emergence of the idea of ??sustainable development. In the face of excessive and unconscious use of natural resources, possible solutions and plannings for the sustainable use of these resources have started to be more discussed in recent years. It is noteworthy that sustainability emerged in this direction in the literature has been used in the meanings of continuation, existence and pursuance. Sustainable development, in its most general definition, is expressed as meeting the needs of today's humanity without compromising the survival rights of future generations. As sustainability and sustainable development with this content are in the field of interest of many disciplines, these are also among the topics of geography, which examines the relationship between natural and human elements. In the research, the relationship between the goals of sustainable development and the goals of geography education is studied. In this context, answers to three sub-questions is also examined in the study. These are; What are the reasons that issue of sustainable development has come to the fore more in recent years, What is the relationship between the general goals of geography education and sustainable development goals, What is the place and role of geography education in the achievement of sustainable development goals? Within the scope of the issues specified in the research, it is aimed to provide an expansion about the subject to educators, people responsible for the preparation of the curriculum, education planners and academicians. In addition, the study also includes suggestions about what can be done in the context of geography education in order to achieve sustainable development goals through analysis and synthesis. Therefore, in this research, the importance and necessity of an effective geography education in the processes of planning, problem solving and decision-making processes regarding the sustainability and sustainable development is emphasized. In this context, the research reveals the relationship between sustainable development-sustainable development goals and geography education from a geographical perspective. In the research, the relationship between sustainability and the aims of geography education is studied by using the qualitative research method. As a result, the close relationship between the sustainable development goals and the geography education is once again emphasized.
