Abstract

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION AND INTERNET AND CELLULAR PHONE USE RATES: THE CASE OF OECD COUNTRIES

The most important digital tools that make cultural globalization effective are the internet and mobile phone network. Especially with the internet network, the facilitation and dissemination of information enables all information and visuals to be transferred quickly across borders. The same is true for the mobile phone network. With the developing technology, it is possible to communicate with people living in any part of the world, thousands of miles away, with mobile phone or smart phone technology. The present study aimed to analyze the correlation between the internet and cellular phone use rates and cultural globalization values in OECD member countries. The analysis was conducted with annual 1990-2018 data for 27 OECD countries. The data used in the study were obtained from the KOF Swiss Economic Institute and the World Bank database. Panel data analysis method was used in the study. Cointegration and causality tests were conducted to determine the correlation between the variables. Initially, the stationarity of the series was determined with the LLC and Im, Pasaran, and Shin tests in the study. Then the cointegration was analyzed with Pedroni and Kao panel cointegration tests, and the direction of cointegration between the variables and the cointegration coefficient was calculated with the FMOLS method, and finally, the causality between the variables was analyzed with the Dimitrescu – Hurlin test. The analysis revealed cointegration and bidirectional causality between cultural globalization, internet use, and the number of mobile network subscribers. A 1% increase in Internet users led to an 8.2% increase in cultural globalization and a 1% increase in mobile network subscribers increased cultural globalization by 3.96%. In this sense, the increase in the number of individuals using the internet and mobile phones positively affect cultural globalization. Similarly, the increase in cultural globalization values also increases the rate of internet and mobile phone usage.
