Abstract

STUDENT VIEWS ON VIDEO-BASED SELF-REGULATED CHOIR CONDUCTING CLASS IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC PROCESS

This qualitative study aims to determine the opinions of students regarding the "Choir Conducting" course in the curriculum of institutions that train music teachers affiliated to Education Faculties in Turkey during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study was conducted with students (N=40) studying music teaching at a university in Central Anatolia in the 2020-2021 Academic Year. Music teachers conduct classroom choirs throughout their professional life. For this reason, what is learned and experienced in the choir conducting course is very significant for a music teacher candidate. First of all,  the theoretical and practical application videos prepared by the researcher for the "choir conducting " were uploaded to the distance education system. Then, the researcher distributed many anthems and songs, especially the Turkish National Anthem, determined for special days and weeks, to the students in the class. Some sections in the textbook were also distributed equally among the students to strengthen the theoretical background. Students managed their own learning processes throughout the semester and were evaluated through three video assignments. Student views on the choir conducting lesson conducted distantly by using video-based and self-regulated learning strategies during the pandemic were evaluated through a semi-structured interview form on four main headings, including gained experiences, advantages of the process,  disadvantages of the process, and the problems encountered.  The obtained data were subjected to content analysis. In line with the findings obtained from the research data, the students stated that they have more responsibility, their technological and theoretical knowledge gained strength, they gained self-confidence, they gained micro-teaching experience, and their verbal communication skills improved. While students consider being able to manage their own learning processes, self-assessment, peer-assessment, virtual observation, re-watching the lesson, and re-shooting the video as an advantage, they described their inability to work with the community, the lack of communication, the inability of the instructor to correct the mistakes immediately, and the inequality of opportunity in education as disadvantages. Video shooting stress, technical problems, shooting videos without chorus, lack of eye contact, and the indifference of their friends were stated as the problems they encountered by the students. Solution suggestions are presented at the end of the study.
