Abstract


ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF CARTOONS IN SCIENCE TEACHING ON PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVELS OF EDUCATION IN TURKEY

Concept cartoons are visual drawings that present ideas about a scientific event in daily life with the help of characters in a cartoon form and contain opposing thoughts about the subject created in the form of discussion. It is known that concept cartoons are used as a tool so that students can participate in the lesson actively, express their thoughts and ideas easily, and arouse curiosity about the lesson. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the descriptive content of the researches about the use of cartoons or concept cartoons in science teaching in Turkey. The sample of the study consists of 39 studies. In the study, in which 23 master's theses, 15 articles and 1 doctoral thesis were examined, coding was made as A1, A2, … A39 in order to analyze the researches more easily. The findings are given in tables and graphs by dividing them into certain categories. As a result of the study, it was seen that the studies were often conducted with the aim of "determining the effect of the use of cartoons in science teaching on the academic achievement of the participants". According to the methods of the studies, it was determined that quasi-experimental and experimental methods from quantitative methods were used most. When the study group distributions of the analyzed studies were examined, it was seen that the samples of the studies consisted of 7th grade students at most. When analyzed according to the subject areas, it was determined that the most researches focused on the subject area of "Living Things and Life". Considering the duration of the studies, it was determined that they were frequently conducted between 4-6 weeks, and the common results were mostly. It was concluded that the use of cartoons in science education positively affected the academic achievement of the participants. It is thought that the study constitutes an organized resource for researchers who will work in the field, as it brings together the researches on cartoons and concept cartoons in science teaching.
