Abstract

EVALUATION OF THE NARRATIVE TEXTS IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL 4TH GRADE TURKISH TEXTBOOK AND MORPA CAMPUS EDUCATION SOFTWARE ACCORDING TO THE TEXTUALITY AND READABILITY CRITERIA

The texts prepared by considering the developments and age levels of the students in primary school play a major role in the acquisition of reading skills. In this regard, it is critical to assess the texts prepared for primary school students in terms of textual requirements and readability standards. In this context, the study's aim is to assess the textuality and readability of texts within the context of the fourth-grade Turkish course in primary school level and texts from the Morpa Campus educational software. In the study, the narrative texts in the fourth-grade Turkish textbook and the narrative texts in the Morpa Campus educational software were examined. Therefore, all texts in the course book and Morpa Campus educational software were firstly investigated in terms of text type and distribution of themes. The narrative texts in the primary school Turkish textbooks and the narrative texts in the Morpa Campus educational software were separated from other text types. Then, a narrative text from each theme was randomly selected for this study. The themes termed as "Art" and "Science and Technology" were not included in the study since there are no narrative texts on these themes in the Morpa Campus Education software. Thus, 14 narrative texts were analyzed within eight themes. Descriptive content analysis was used to examine the texts chosen for the study. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the texts were compatible with the textuality criteria and the readability levels were higher than the grade level.
