Abstract

THE ORGANIZATIONAL PROCESS IN THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE IN EASTERN THRACE, LÜLEBURGAZ AND EDIRNE CONGRESSES
The process of occupation of Eastern Thrace after the signing of the Armistice of Moudros started with the seizure of Uzunköprü-Sirkeci railway line in 4 November 1918 by the French. Immediately after this seizure, the first organization against the events to be faced in Thrace was performed by the foundation of “Ottoman Defense Committee of Thrace-Paşaeli” on 2 December 1918. The effect of this association is higher in the struggles in the Thrace Front in the War of Independence. In the process of the struggle for independence in Eastern Thrace, which started by the actual occupation in 20 July 1920 by Greece, the Lüleburgaz Congress executed and decisions taken on 31 March-2 April 1920 after the First and Second Edirne Congresses can be regarded as a serious step for the defense of Eastern Thrace. Then, the Great Edirne Congress, held between dates 9-13 May 1920 has a significant feature in the liberation of Thrace with the decisions taken there. In this congress, it was declared once again that Thrace is the land of Turks and all the Thracians are ready to defend the territory for that. This article was handled by examining the “Thrace Paşaeli Newspaper”, Archives of General Staff Military History and Strategic Studies Department, Atatürk Collection and War of Independence Collections, and the minutes of meetings of the Thrace Paşaeli Committee and Edirne Congress that are placed in the Ankara University Archives of the Institute of History of Turkish Revolution, which are the first-hand sources for the period. In the first part of the article; the establishment, organization, and activities of the Ottoman Defense Committee of Thrace-Paşaeli and the steps to be taken towards the defense of Thrace are explained, while in the second part the importance of Lüleburgaz and Edirne Congresses are emphasized.
