Abstract

A PILOT STUDY OF VERY SEVERE EROSION PROBLEM EVALUATING
In the present study, it is aimed to explain the findings about determining and preventing the current and very severe erosion problem seen in the Kavakdere Basin in the northwest of the Ganos Mount. The present study, the foundation of which began to be laid in 2009, is considerably important because no measure has been taken so far to prevent the erosion in the area, and also construction works have been launched in the lower course of the basin for Naipköy Dam. Expected to be finished in 2015 according to the plan, this dam is very crucial as it is to supply the drinking water in Tekirdağ province. In the event that the severe erosion problem in the dam basin near the section holding the water is not overcome, the lifespan of Naipköy Dam will be shorter than expected, and the reservoir area will fill up in a very little time. In the preparation phase of the study, the literature was reviewed, and thematic maps of the area were drawn out through the GIS (Geographic Information System). In the observation phase of the study, local data were collected through field works, and the farm operator in the field was interviewed. Lastly, it was determined that the erosion, which is considered to have started around 2004, caused 6000 tons of soil loss in approximately 11 years (2004 to 2015). Though erosion occurred in this site as a natural process, it turned into an accelerated one as a result of some unconscious human activity. Thus, the main cause of erosion is human factor. To This paper was written to carry this issue to a scientific platform.
