TEACHER CANDIDATES RECEPTION FOR SCHOOL AND TEACHER THEMED FILMS
This study was carried out to determine reception of teacher candidates for school and teacher themed films. One of the qualitative research model, “case study” was adopted in this study. The aim is to determine primary teacher candidates’ opinions and receptions about the films. In this research, 38 fourth-grade students in Gazi University, Faculty of Education participated. A focus group evaluation process was conducted to determine teacher candidates receptions for the films after the film screenings finished. Content analysis approach was adopted for the data analysis. In the study, a coding system based on coding-encoding model developed by Stuart Hall was adopted to determine teacher candidates’ receptions. According to data teacher candidates’ receptions about school and teacher themed films are “negotiator”. Teacher candidates are aware of the main idea highlighted in the film and scenario but they inference according to their own circumstances. When teacher candidates feel themselves very close to the characters and circumstances in the film they adopt a “dominant (hegemonic)” form of reception. Also they adopt “opponent” form of reception when they perceive "legend" teacher profile in the film, the environment and cincumstances as utopian and incompatible with soco-cultural features.
